The AFL announced a club announcement last night at a news conference which said it was investigating the matter and that the club would "fully consider any and all offers" if it deemed it necessary to act.


Club secretary Mark LeCras said while the board was "uncomfortable" about the situation, that it did not have the power to decide that the club would not play the club's home games.

"The board has asked us to fully consider any and all offers and we hope that we will respond in a prompt, fair and courteous manner," LeCras said.


"Our primary focus as an AFL club is winning footy for the people of Fremantle Football Club.


"The board will not give up our home games at the Gabba to put them behind and we will continue to fight for our game and the integrity of our sporting competitions in order to maintain them, because that is the way Fremantle has always operated."

The situation began when the Gabba announced it was moving its home matches to the VFL ground, after failing to break through.

This was a result of strong community support which helped the local AFL clubs push a new venue to the board's support.

However, if the board was aware of a desire to get the match moved to more remote ground at the expense of the Gabba, it could have been put forward for approval through the Board of Football.

The incident will allow the AFL to review a variety of issues before moving ahead.


In response to the news, the WA government said it was "disappointed" that the Gabba had broken off any talks with another venue for a game.


"The AFL's decision to close the Gabba gates and stop all talks with an alternative location is disappointing for the community and for the football club's ability to compete in the Victorian Premiership," the Opposition said in a statement on Monday.
